Toy train ride to Matheran set to become faster

Get to Matheran faster

29 September, 2012: Tourists planning a trip to the hill station of Matheran could soon enjoy a faster ride on the historic Neral-Matheran toy train to travel to the main Matheran Station and back. The Central Railway has just announced plans to reduce the travel time on the 21-km route by half an hour each way by increasing the speed of the train. Currently it takes two hours to get from Neral to the main Matheran Station. Once the train coaches, braking system and tracks are suitably modified over the next six months to increase the narrow gauge toy train’s speed from 12 kmph to 16 kmph, the same journey is likely to take around 1 ½ to 1 ¾ hours.

Last October, the Central Railway had introduced an eight-coach rake with air brakes to enhance safety and comfort. The coaches had improved interiors and exteriors and also large windows and a transparent roof so tourists can enjoy the panoramic view even more. Neral is located around 100kms from Mumbai, and Matheran is a popular weekend getaway for Mumbai-ites.
