Madhubala’s wax statue at Delhi’s Tussauds Museum
Considered by millions to be the most beautiful Bollywood actress ever, Madhubala may have died at the tender age of 36 in 1969, but she has now been immortalised at the new Madame Tussauds in Delhi. When the museum opens later this year, her millions of fans will have the unique opportunity to pose for pictures with the wax statue of this iconic star from Bollywood’s golden era.
The Tussauds at New Delhi, which will be the 24th such museum in the world, will feature a number of other Bollywood celebrities, in addition to wax statues of political leaders, sports stars, and historical figures.
Last month, Madhubala’s wax statue was unveiled in Delhi, making this legendary beauty the first star from the classical world of Indian cinema to be honoured as one of the major attractions here. Madhubala’s statue has been styled to match her role as Anarkali in the all-time Bollywood hit Mughal-E-Azam.
On the occasion of the unveiling, Anshul Jain, General Manager and Director Merlin Entertainments India Pvt Ltd, said, “We are glad to have the figure of Madhubala at Madame Tussauds Delhi. She still continues to rule the hearts of billions of fans in the nation. We are sure that her magnetic beauty will attract her fans to click a selfie and relive a special moment with her and be transported back to the golden era of cinema.” Madhubala’s visibly moved younger sister said, “We are extremely thankful to the Madame Tussauds team for creating such a beautiful depiction of Madhubala.”
The Madame Tussauds in London is one of the biggest attractions of this popular tourist destination. This was the first Tussauds museum in the world and it was founded in 1835 by Marie Tussaud, a French woman exceptionally skilled in wax modelling. The museum she set up was located on London’s Baker Street. Tussauds was moved to its current location in 1883. Today, the line-up of celebrity statues here include those of Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif.
Some of the other major cities in the world that have a Tussauds as a tourist attraction include Amsterdam, Beijing, Berlin, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Las Vegas, New York City, Washington D.C., and Sydney.
