Indian passport to be issued in one week

Get your Indian passport in 7 days with just 4 documents

indian passport applicationIt’s true. It will no longer take ages to get your Indian passport. Now with only four documents you could get it in just a week!

According to the changes announced by the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian passport application process is going to be fast-tracked by way of the following modifications in the existing rules:
1. Citizens applying for a fresh passport under the normal category will need to submit self-attested photocopies of just four documents with their application – Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID (EPIC – electoral photo identity card), and an affidavit of no criminal case which includes family details and citizenship (an affidavit in the format of Annexure-I – declaration of citizenship, family details and no criminal record).

2. Instead of being done before the passport is issued (a process that took weeks), police verification will now be carried out after the passport is issued, provided the submitted documents are validated.

3. Applicants can choose convenient appointment dates from the first five available dates for passport-related services at the selected Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). Earlier, the Passport Seva system fixed the appointment date based on availability and first-in-firstout (FIFO) principle.

4. No extra charges are applicable under the new procedure.

Before this, such an expedited process was provided only under the Tatkal scheme which required a much higher application fee.

Anil Kumar Sobti, director of the passport division in the MEA explained that the new process was introduced to liberalise the application process without compromising on security.

He added, “There are plenty of inbuilt safeguards in our system which can instantly spot fake identities and forgeries. Most importantly, our system is linked to the Aadhaar database which helps conduct real-time verification of the applicant while s/he is still at the Passport Seva Kendra.”
